I am willing to paint posthumous portraits, but before I can commit to it, I need to see the reference materials to ensure a high quality portrait.
I stretch my own canvases and use only high quality Belgian linen and traditional archival oil paint.
PLANNING SESSION
At the initial planning meeting with the client and/or subject we will discuss details regarding the portrait. We will make decisions about the spirit (type) of the portrait, the size of the canvas, clothing to be worn, background, etc. If possible this meeting takes place in the client's home or office, or my studio. If necessary this initial meeting can be conducted by phone.
PHOTO SITTING
Sittings may take place at my studio, or I can travel to the subject's location. At the sitting we work out the pose and take reference photos. This usually takes two to three hours. (At this point I may also paint a quick head study for accurate color reference.) This is an important time for me to get to know and observe the sitter, to pick up mannerisms, gestures, to get a sense of who this person is.
Then I review the photos and at a later meeting (possibly the same day) present the different compositions for the client to choose from. An additional photo shoot may be required at this point.
Once a direction is selected I do a detailed charcoal drawing to establish composition and likeness. I may also work up a small color study for the portrait. When that is approved the portrait is completed in my studio.
